lyric analysis

lyrics analysis:

We recieved inspiration from many of the lyrics for the setting such as "we have the whole world in our hands from the glaciers to the sand" which is repeated more then once so a beach seemed the most appropriate setting.

"you sell yourself short everytime these signs will guide you home" - We got the inspiration from this line of the lyrics that the girls life has turned upside down and the boy singing the song has seen it happen more then once and she always puts herself in the same situation with the same boy but she sees his true colours and realizes.

"he calls your name, the one you dream of, he calls your name your falling deeper"- this line gave us the idea of her falling asleep at the beach and we see her life as a dream that becomes chaotic and more nightmare like.

notes on the story board

Vicky: By making this storyboards and setting out a path of the shots we will incorporate into our music video.
It will give us a clear out line when we go to do our shoot, and all the way through our editing process. We will, however, have to remember that we do not need to follow these designs to a tee, meaning that we can put in another soot or cut one differently if, in the end it helps with the over all product.

Test Shots and Costume

tyler- test shot and costume

bradley- test shot and costume

will- test shots and costume

liam- test shot and costume

chloe's test shot and costume
these are the images of our test shots and to show the costume we used for our music video. we wanted to keep the theme of black and white tops and dark jeans. we wanted this look because our digipak is colour co-ordinated black and white. we also thought this was relevant to our genre of music which is alternative rock and this seemed the most appropriate as it isnt too over the top.

Revised Mock Ups of CD Cover

Due to the band changing their name we have revised the Digipak making it more in keeping with the new name.

as vicky was designing these cd mock ups, i helped come up with the idea of relating the bands name in with the cd somehow, because their name is maine river we designed the first image, however we then though of having black and white clouds because the image looked similar to rushing waves and it also kept in with the black and white theme. it is also looked really professional and was something that we both liked therefore we went for our second option.

production company name and logo

this was an idea that was something i thought would work well for our production company:
screamers never squeal productions and logo:

i then produced the logo on photoshop and captured the photo from google and changed the affect.

Group Meeting- 23/11/11

Today we discovered that our band "Vienna" had changed their name to "Maine River" this was because of legal reasons. this meant vicky and i had to change our digipak ideas and and some of our research and planning.

Weather predictions for filming

we are preparing to film at the weekend Saturday 26th November and Sunday 27th November at Ingress Park. the weather for both days show that it should not be raining so it will be okay as we are filming outside.

Risk Assessment

Digipak Mock Ups (CD Only)

I chose this water theme for the CD due to the song Somewhere Between the Tide & I however I don't want the whole album to be about one song.
The V and A (with out the middle bit) is worked from the bands logo that they put on their t-shirts, so we have decided to work around that.

This is our second idea we have decided to do it in grayscale as we will be shooting the performance part of the video in black and white.
we used cracks to compliment the songs on the album as well as the albums name.

This is my first attempt however the pattern on this are waves however again this is too in line with the song we are doing.

Digipak Influences

As I also do Graphic Communication at A-Level a lot of my influences come from that, however I have also taken a lot of my inspiration from Kings of Leon's album covers for the front artwork of the digipak, Kings of Leon always use abstract and distorted images for their album, like this as it make the buyer a bit confused to what the album is about however it also makes them more interested into what it is all about.
Also by analysing You Me At Six's digipak i liked the fact that they added pictures of them selves in the theme of the rest of the digipak, so hopefully we can add some of those parts to our own unique digipak.

group meeting 17/11/11

today we went to our other location to work out the lightings and to book it out. we booked it out for next wednesday 12:15 till 1:15 and 3:15 till 5. lighting can make it not look like a lecture theatre as we worked out how to black out the lecture theatre and just use spotlights and the rigs.

however we then were offered another location that looked better and more professional and was a local venue so we took this instead of using the lecture theatre

Camera: ehancing ideas

I looked up videos where they use different camera techniques and different use of lightings, angles and effects. One music video that caught my attention is Vampire weekend A-punk, where they use such little however it is such a fantastic music video. this music video is performance however also conceptual because they use their body for alternative sounds. they also follow the lyrics quite a bit this normally would not work however it work because the music videos been speeded up and
 using the idea of hyper-realism:

the video has been speeded up but keeps within the beat of the music. it is quirky and enjoyable to watch eventhough the camera is kept in one place throughout.

Music Video Analysis

I chose this song as 30 Seconds to Mars are an alternative rock band like Maine River who we are making the music video for.
The music video starts off with a strong, thought provoking quote by H.G. Wells followed by the band saying 'This is a song about Peace' showing from the start that they care about whats going on in the world and the influences it has on their music.

Then in keeping with the song title the video changes to what looks like military equipment honing in on the world, which could symbolise the world being at war, this carries on to focus in to one point, drawing the audience in.

This follows to the title of the song with what looks like a heart beat monitor bit through the middle which could symbolise the heart beat of people fighting in wars all over the world. As well as using the colour scheme of red and black, red symbolising danger and stop, black symbolising darkness and loneliness.

following this there are quick shots to more military themed shots at various angle, then at last landing on the band in military uniforms, looking like they are going in to battle.
using silioettes they create the mood, and the environment that the band is in.
This is a very political video, using key words to spark a reaction in the audience, they focus on the people and the reasons that effect the world and war.

The video is put together in a news like fashion, with actual pictures in the video from the news this gives the audience a feel of realness.
The video picks up pace when a battle commences leaving the band no choice but to fight, all you can see of the opponents is the tanks and other weaponry flying towards the band this could symbolise that we never truly know who and what we are fighting just that we need to.
The video takes on a technological route animating when the equipment starts to plummet to the ground like they have a magnetic pull piling up, on impact you see flashes of historic figures and scenes associated with war, to make a pyramid/triangle which is the bands symbols which could in turn mean the only people that we are truly fighting is ourselves.

Music Video Analysis: Paramore- Ignorance

Ignorance- Paramore

I chose this song because the band Paramore is an alternative rock band and this video has a lot of symbolism and reflection to the lyrics. it is very well crafted and there are notions of looking and visual references throughout it. the song was written by Hayley Williams the lead vocalist of the band as the band went through a period where they were going to split up and she used her song writing skills to show them how she felt and in this video we see both sides of the story from her view and the other band members views.

the video starts in our perspective like we are walking towards the door and opening it:

This is a notion of looking that we experience as the viewer getting us more involved in the video.

As soon as the guitar and drums kick in the light comes on in the room and we see a dark cramped room where the band are playing in with a hanging light bulb. we then see quick cuts of the band as a whole in the room together, then close ups of the guitarists and lead singer. it also has quick cuts of them performing on a larger stage to. this all happens within the introduction of the song which is 25 seconds long, the lead singer we see her looking confused and banging against the walls to. from the music you can tell this song is aggressive and angry which is shown within this 25 seconds. Throughout the introduction you can see the bands image in this video by what they are wearing which is all dark-black clothing which is aggressive and pessimistic like the song is.
As the introduction comes to an end we get a midshot of hayley williams grabbing the light bulb which we see extends out.

When the lead singer begins to sing she pulls on the bulb and we can see from her expressions she isnt happy with the band members. it cuts quickly between the cramped small room and the stage. Hayley gets into the other band members faces but they ignore her.

This relates to the song title "ignorance" as they are ignoring her no matter how much she shines the lightbulb in their faces. the light bulb can be interpreted as interegation however it can also be interpreted as the media press because in the small cramped room the lead of the light bulb only stretches a little bit so the light is always in her face, the press and media always focuses on her and forgets the other band. no matter how much she tries to involve them it doesnt work because she is the face of the band. up to a minute within the music video, there are alot of rapid cuts to the cramped room and the band members ignoring hayley to them being on the larger staged room. there a variety of close ups of the band members and the instruments and hayley with the light bulb.

from this image above, you can see that the band is still ignoring her and singling her out and the light bulb wire has extended out which relates to the music video later on. these cuts become even more rapid and the music video gets more aggressive as hayley begins to get right into the camera with the lightbulb and no matter what she does the band isnt listening to her or paying any attention to her.

it then suddenly cuts to her in a room filled with mirrors wearing a white outfit and her hair is pulled back. her image has completely changed and i think it is filled with ironic images as the mirrors could be interpreted as because the band thinks the press constantly want to know about her and all attention is on her this is the interpretation of it and no matter where she turns in this small room filled with mirrors she cant get out and she looks like a mental patient by the way she is portrayed in a straight jacket. we see this in the rapid shots of cuts between the cramped room and this room of mirrors.

the video ends with the band on the stage performing and hayley is holding the light bulb in the face and the rest of the band members wrap the wire around her showing the spotlight is on her eventhough this is not what she wants as in the small cramped room, she is trying to shine the light in their eyes.

you can see the narrative structure throughout this music video it can be clearly pointed out as it follows the idea of ignorance and their concept. i think this video is a great music video to analyse its concept and hyper-reality involved.

Target Audience Research

You me at six is a band that we think relates to our band the most so we decided to check out You me at six's subscribers on their youtube channel. we also looked on their facebook fan page just so we got more of a general fixed idea of who we are aiming our campaign and music video at.

You me at six's facebook page:

As vicky and myself are both fans of you me at six we are already joined to their page and we checked out how many of our other friends are a fan of them to. from the picture above it shows that 37 of our friends and a band that we also enjoy like You me at six's page. these friends are a age range between 15-18 years old and it is mixed sex's. it is more girls then boys out of our friends who have liked this page but from their videos such as "Stay with me" and "Underdog" you can see that they are trying to appeal more to one type of gender (girls) because girls can relate more to the video romantically.
You can also see that a friend of ours has listened to you me at six on "Spotify" which is similar to the product itunes where you can download music at a certain cost and share this music with friends who also have Spotify.

When we clicked on our friends profiles, to see what other band pages they liked we come across the likings of:
  • Paramore
  • Kings of Leon
  • 30 Seconds to Mars
  • Fall out Boy
  • etc.

these are also related to more alternative rock like our band Vienna and from the friends that like this music we can see who is more likely to listen to our music and as our final ideal has a romantic edge to it, we think it will appeal more to girls.

below is an image that i print screened from their facebook page showing how many people "Liked" You me at six's page and how many people are talking about them on facebook.

You me at six's official youtube channel:

on you me at six's profile it is shown that they have 28,051 and counting subscribers that have subscribed to their youtube channel and their age is 27

group meeting 7/11/11

okay so today vicky and I had a group meeting because we have had a few issues within our campaign and band. The unsigned band who originally created the song "Somwhere between the tide & i" are extremely busy and its hard to create a production schedule that doesn't clash with their schedule so we asked them if we could use a group of music students for our music video which they were fine with so we have a new band who will play the song for our music video.
the new group consists of liam smith- vocals
tyler hart- bass
will clark- lead guitar
bradley james- drums

we then had more issues with our location that we are still working out and hopefully have sorted by the end of the week.

Digipak Analysis

digipak influences

the image below are influences for our digipak which follow for our genre of music that are band is which is alternative rock. these album covers influences us the most, as they all relate to the bands image or album meaning as a whole.

Digipak analysis

Today I am going to be talking about the Katy Perry digipak because I think it is a good example of a well put together digipak. As you can see that the consistency of the baby pink colours and blues collaborate throughout the digipak as it represents candy colours. Instantly from the first image we see the artist laying on a cotton candy cloud which the audience instantly get hopefully is a consistent produce of candy images. This shows the artist on a more bubbly and sweet side which many young girls and teenagers can relate to. This also shows that the artist is of pop genre because it is bright and a fun look that many other artists go for in the pop genre whereas rock is more dark images and includes more images of rock instruments

location recce change!

we were originally going to shoot our music video at herne bay, however because of financial issues, we settled for a closer pier, Ingress park, as it overlooks the river thames and still looks similar to a beach. we also are using the mick jagger centre as we want two different locations for both of our performance and narrative which both will be shot at both locations, as it ties in with our music video idea.
